Dark Souls 3 is in development, and for many fans of the franchise (like me) that is all you will need to know. It is the third installment of the trilogy – though interviews with director Hidetaka Miazaki (via VG247) have confirmed that this won’t mean the end of the franchise.

Back to it roots

The third game’s story is to revolve around the Lord of Cinder. This calls back to the first Dark Souls, once again picking up the theme of fire and darkness. In keeping with this, Dark Souls 3’s appearance maintains the franchise's desiccated beauty - a once gorgeous world now collapsing, and shrouded in shadow. In the early build of the game currently being shown, this is represented by embers floating through the world and a dim, dying sun in the distance.
This return to the original Dark Souls lore could be Hidetaka Miazaki influence. The original Dark Souls director has returned to co-directing this third installment of the trilogy. This will be good news for some fans, who cited his absence as a weakness for Dark Souls 2.

Once more into the darkness

Looking at the gameplay, FROM Software seems to have learned from the weapon system in their last release, Bloodborne. While the combat remains heavy and paced - with patience and defensive play still a focus - this third game is claimed to apply unique combat styles and stances to every weapon. This should add more variety to fights, with substantive differences between weapons creating increased tactical options.
For example, a light rapier will apply a ready stance for fast execution of moves. By comparison, a great sword has you character plant themselves with a shoulder charge, before launching armored opponents in to the air with an upward swing. Similarly, armor is also promised to have an increased impact on combat technique.

Burning bright

Coming in early 2016, Dark Souls 3 will be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
